Since the 1970s, sales of subcompacts have taken off. Ever since then, the domestic automakers are trying to get a share of that market. Honda and Toyota have long dominated the market for vehicles that sell low and sip gas. General Motors, Ford Motors, and Chrysler have been trying to rain on that parade for decades. Later this year, the Chevy Cruze is going to be released for sale, and Ford will soon debut the new Focus. Both automobile makers appear to be poised for aggressive marketing of those models.
Chevy Cruze to come out soon

Don’t ignore Ford Motors
The Ford Motors Fiesta, a subcompact, gets 29 and 40 mpg, city and highway, and has been selling incredibly well. The Focus is getting a facelift, and a new one will be out in 2012. The essential Focus now gets 25 mpg. The essential Focus goes for $ 16,640. The Fiesta is a meager $ 13,320. That makes either of those automobiles comparable to the Honda Civic and Toyota Corolla fairly easily. Since Chrysler and Fiat are now one, expect a Fiat via Chrysler sometime soon.
The Big Three finally becoming wise

It is not the case that no domestic automaker can make a subcompact. All 3 are going to get pushy about the modern vehicles though. It may be a great time to buy American again.
